Pattern Review: Hei Hei Inspired Rooster Crochet Beanie

For Halloween this year, (on a rare Saturday!) we are going to our friend’s Tiki themed home. And as a huge Disney fan, what better island creatures than Hei Hei and Pua from Moana!

Hei Hei

After a lot of browsing, and considering the short timeline, I decided to play it safe and buy a pattern to make the comb, eyes, beak, and wattles for Hei Hei. I based mine off this Hei Hei Inspired pattern from Hats By Tracy https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hei-hei-inspired This pattern is actually only for the hat rooster parts and doesn’t include the hat base. I would give this pattern a 3.5/5 based on clarity. Also I think the pattern should have included the simple hat base that the author used in the pattern picture, rather than me needing to google one up. Even something as simple as how many strands of yarn to use for each color of the braid would be nice. And it’s always nice to know exactly what color yarn the author used in case you really love those colors in the pattern picture. However the pattern gives you all the accessories needed to make this derpy rooster hat.

Hei Hei Inspired Hat from Hats By Tracy

Materials:

I used a 5.00mm hook

Red Chenille Velvet Unbranded Yarn from amazon: https://a.co/d/0fEZGpZ3 but I would not recommend it. Lots of ends tied together. And the yarn, was melted in some areas.

Golden yellow for beak: chenille OMoiut yarn from amazon: https://a.co/d/0f3GTRqq

White Yarn for eyeball: Big Twist Baby Bear Powdered Sugar (240g/7oz)

Purple Yarn for eye rim: Big Twist Posh Chic Smoothie Bow (233 yd/ 7oz)

Black yarn for beak details from amazon: https://a.co/d/0jeQxz0B

For the Teal green tassel, Big Twist Posh Chic Kale (233 yd / 7oz). I’m not sure why this color is called kale, I’ve never seen kale this vibrant teal green before.

My hat Base I used the awful red chenille yarn:

Row 1: 10DC in Magic Ring.

Row 2: 2 DC in every stitch, join with sl st, ch2.

Row 3: **2 DC, 2DC in next stitch** repeat to end of row, join with sl st, ch2

Row 4: **3 DC, 2DC in next stitch** repeat to end of row, join with sl st, ch2

Row 5: **4 DC, 2DC in next stitch** repeat to end of row, join with sl st, ch2

Row 6: **5 DC, 2DC in next stitch** repeat to end of row, join with sl st, ch2

Row 7 – 12: DC in every stitch, join with sl st, ch2 (until 7 inches to to hat center)

I didn’t like the ruffle in the pattern, and decided to use the border here in this pattern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnakV_l3FxY by Hectanooga1

I think this was a bit of a mistake but in case you like it, here’s how I added the ruffle feather layers:

First red ruffle layer for red feather edge:

Row 13a: Work in Front Loops of row 12. In FLO of first stitch form a shell [(sc, 3 dc, sc) into that single stitch] skip 2 stitches, ***form another shell in FLO (sc, 3 dc, sc) and skip 2 stitches*** until the end of the row. Sl st to join into the first sc of the row.

(Now you have a super cute scallop edged hat! Stopping here and pivoting to a little strawberry hat was super tempting, but I resisted)

Swap to Golden Yellow yarn for second ruffle layers. (remaking this hat, I would actually make the entire ear flap red, rather than 1 layer of red ruffle and 2 layers of yellow ruffle. I would leave the yellow for the braided tassels only)

Row 13b. working in the Back loops of row 12. attach yellow yarn to back loop of row 12. Chain 2. DC in each backloop. (if it’s hard to find the back loops of the 2 skipped stitches between the shell stitches, just eyeball it and get in 1 DC for each shell and 2 DC between each shell. this layer is mostly covered by the shell ruffle) sl st to the first DC to join.

Row 14: **Shell (sc 3dc sc), skip 2 stitches** **to end of the row. sl st into first sc to join, fasten off.

First ear flap

(Join yarn onto. a backloop on a stitch the left of the base of a shell stitch on Row 13B. )

ROW 1: 14 SC. ch1. turn. (14)

Row 2: dec, 12 sc, ch1 turn (13)

Row 3 a: in FLO of row 2. (Shell stitch [sc 3dc sc], skip 2 ) x4, shell stitch into last stitch of the row. turn. (13)

Row 3b: in BLO row 2, skip first stitch or dec, 9 sc, dec, ch1 turn (11)

Row 4: dec, 7 sc, dec, ch1 turn (9)

Row 5a: in FLO skip 1, shell, skip 2, shell, skip 2, shell, slst into last stitch. turn

Row 5B: in BLO dec, 5 sc, dec, (7)

Row 6: dec, 3, dec (5)

row7a: in FLO skip 1, shell BLO, skip 2 ,shell

row 7b: in BLO dec 1 dec (3)

row8: dec 1sc

row 9: dec. fasten off.

longer gap in front.

earflap 2:

tie on yarn 9 shells in between the ear flaps.

14 sc in back loops of hat row, repeat other ear flap

Add a sc border along the bottom edge opening of the hat, going up and down the edges of each earflap. Crochet 1 sc per row.

Add on ties to the bottom of each flap using yellow, red, and green yarn braided together. I used 3 strands of each color yarn on each side. (folded in half so that it was 6 strands of each color yarn in each braid)

Complete!
