Pattern Review – Stardew Valley Crochet Chickens

Completed a flock of chickens for the Stardew Valley: Symphony of Seasons Grand Finale concert at Red Rocks in Colorado. (https://www.stardewvalleyconcert.com/) What an amazing concert. So many great song arrangements performed very well by the musicians and surprise beginning and ending speeches from ConcernedApe. And even a bonus guest performance with him on the steel drums. The concert inspired me to pick the oboe and violin back up. Had a lot of fun making these chickens for all my stardew valley loving friends.

There are so many cute Stardew Valley chicken patterns online.

In the end I decided to go with this one from crochetbydyll https://crochetbydyll.com/products/no-sew-stardew-chicken-pdf-stardew-valley-inspired-crochet-pattern-easy-plushie-guide-with-photos

I used a size 5.00mm hook. And the following chenille yarn from amazon:

golden yellow for the beak: https://a.co/d/03rMZpTj

Red for the comb: https://a.co/d/07HDVjOI

Black for the eyes and the void chicken body: https://a.co/d/03rMZpTj

camel for the brown chicken body: https://a.co/d/03rMZpTj

big twist white for the white chicken body

blue for the blue chicken body: https://a.co/d/0cR2a017

I went with this pattern because its chickens don’t have the faux hawk the in-game chickens have, and they were more obviously chickens to people who haven’t played the game. It’s also cute and small and the perfect size for a desk buddy.

This pattern was well written, with lots of pictures. I’d recommend it, and rate it a 4/5. I do think it could have used a few more pictures of the in-between process, and I think the embroidery steps for the beak and the wing attachment should have come before finishing off the crochet head. I also think he should have shown it with a purple comb on the blue chicken for the pattern if it was marketed as a stardew chicken. And it was difficult to make a comb that looked the same as the pattern. A bobble stitch with 2 dc, isn’t universally known, so it could have been more beginner friendly with a link to an exact tutorial or explanation. Otherwise it was a very detailed pattern, and the pattern pdf itself is also very aesthetic.

After experimenting a bit with the embroidery, I liked the chickens best embroidered with just one pass of yarn. For the eyes, I started from the top of row 14, straight down for 2 stitches, and with 4 empty stitches between the eyes.

I made a few versions for the beak, but I think the beak also looked cutest with just one pass of yarn. I embroidered with the yellow yarn starting at the same height where the eye ends, with 1 stitch horizontally between the beak start and the eye.

I also found that it was easier to embroider on the eyes, beak, and the wings after completing row 14 before starting row 15, because that made it easier to securely square knot tie the ends of the embroidery inside the chicken.

It’s easy to overstuff the chicken, but the chickens are so much more fun and squishable when you don’t overstuff and leave some room to squish. Also, as tempting as it is to use random yarn scraps, they aren’t as squishable as actual polyester fiber stuffing.
