This pattern is inspired by my childhood memories of watching the Doraemon cartoon show while visiting relatives in Taiwan. Also for the random Doraemon themed items I had in my childhood.

And also inspired by my friend going to Big Bang’s London Cosmos concert, in faintest hopes she can bring it and get some direct fan interaction from Daesung from her pit ticket. Hoping this might catch his eye amid the chaos of the crowd since Daesung’s spoken often in the past for his love of Doraemon. Plus Daesung has blue hair for the tour.
Materials
Using this pretty blue chenille yarn. https://a.co/d/09XqILep
White teddy yarn for the mouth area.
Leftover thin red yarn for the nose
Leftover white Big Twist Yarn, (used a different texture of white to stand out from the mouth)
Black chenille yarn for whisker details. (could also use to sew on the eyes instead of safety eyes)
Safety eyes with oval eyes.
Crochet hooks
size: 5.75mm (for the chenille and teddy yarn),
size 4.50mm (for white eyes)
size 3.75mm (for red nose)
Pattern
For this Doraemon hat I loosely based it off the free Lions Brand Aviator Hat Pattern. Essentially you’ll want to crochet a flat circle (to 7.5 inc in diameter), then crochet walls until about 7.5 inc from the center of the circle. The white mouth area should be 8 inches in width.
Hat Base:
Round 1: Magic Chain, sc 7 , sl st to first sc. (7sc)
Rd 2: Ch1, turn, sc inc in each stitch, join with sl st to first sc of the round (14 sc)
Rd 3: Ch1, turn, *sc inc, sc* repeat ** 7 times. sl st to first sc of the round (21 sc)
Rnd 4: Ch1, turn, *sc inc, sc, sc, * repeat ** 7 times. sl st to first sc of the round (28)
Rnd 5: Ch1, turn, *sc, sc inc, sc, sc * repeat ** 7 times, sc, sl st to first sc of the round (35)
(note: will continue increasing, until circle top of hat is 7.5 inches diameter)
Rd 6: Ch1, turn, *sc inc, sc, sc, sc ,sc * repeat ** 7 times to end of round, sl st to join. (42)
Rd 7: Ch1, turn, *sc, sc, sc inc, sc, sc, sc * repeast ** 7 times to end of round ,sl st to join. (49)
Rd8: Ch1, turn *sc inc, 6sc* repeat ** 7 times, sl st, (56 sc)
Rd9: Ch1, turn *3 sc, sc inc, 4sc* repeat ** 7 times, sl st, (63 sc)
Rd10: Ch1, turn *sc inc, 8sc* repeat ** 7 times, sl st, (70 sc)
Rd 11 -26 : Ch1, turn sc in each st, sl st to join. (70)
I ran out of blue chenille yarn here but some added ear flaps would make this hat super cute.
Mouth area
White mouth area: white teddy yarn, 9 mm hook. The key to working with teddy yarn is a stitch counter for the first stitch of the current row, and stitch counter for the first stitch on the row below to know where to end. (if working with regular yarn where stitches are visible skip the ch1 and sc directly into sc of last row for a straight edge)
chain 19
row 1: beginning in 2nd ch from hook, sc 18 (18 st)
row 2-6 : ch1, turn, 18 sc. (18 st)
Row 7: ch1, turn, sctog, 14 sc, sctog, (16 st)
row 8: ch 1, turn, sctog, 12 sc, sctog (14 st)
row 9: ch 1, turn, sctog, 10 sc, sctog (12 st)
row 10: ch 1, turn, sctog, 8 sc, sctog (10 st)
row 11: ch 1, turn, sctog, 6 sc, sctog (8 st)
row 12: ch 1, turn, sctog, 4 sc, sctog (6 st). fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing
optional: starting from bottom edge, add a sc border to round out the edge. adding sc inc as needed.
Eyes:
Using Big Twist Yarn, 4.5mm hook
4 chain. in 2nd ch from hook 2sc, 1 sc in next st, 3 sc in last st, 1 sc, sl st join.
rnd 2: sc inc in next 3 sc, 1 sc, sc inc in next 3 sc, 1 sc, sl st join. fasten off.
Rnd 3: (sc inc, sc) x3, 1sc, (sc inc, sc) x3, 1sc, sl st join
Rnd 4: (sc inc, sc, sc) x3, 1sc, (sc inc, sc,sc) x3, 1sc, sl st join
weave in ends, attach safety eyes or use black yarn to embroider eyes. Doraemon also commonly has an upside down “u” instead of pupils.
Nose:
3.75mm hook,
rd1: magic circle, 6sc, sl st join.
Rd2 : ch1, ( sc inc ) x 6, sl st join.
rd 3: ch1, ( sc inc, sc ) x 6, sl st join.
rd4: ch1, ( sc inc, sc, sc ) x 6, sl st join.
Assemble:
Then sew everything onto the hat. Start with the mouth, then the eyes, then the nose, and finish off by adding some whiskers with black yarn. The eyes should be fairly parallel, and slightly slanted inwards. The fuzzy yarn hides sewing stitches will, so no need to stress too much 🙂
